“Data Journalism” 4-week course introduces participants to the craft of using data analysis and visualization in media production, media analysis, and media advocacy today. This course analyses current big data and data visualization uses in reporting and then trains in the various methodologies and applications relevant to print and online journalism.
While telling stories with data has been part of the news practice since its earliest days, it is amidst a renaissance. Graphics desks, which used to be deemed as “the art department,” a subfield outside the work of newsrooms, are becoming a core part of newsrooms’ operation. Those people (they often have various titles: data journalists, news artists, graphic reporters, developers, etc.) who design news graphics are expected to be full-fledged journalists and work closely with reporters and editors.
The purpose of this program is to learn how to think about the visual presentation of data, how and why it works, and how to do it the right way. We will learn how to make graphs like The New York Times, Vox, Pew, and FiveThirtyEight. In the end, you can share–embed your beautiful, interactive charts in publications, blog posts, and websites.

Visualization in Newsrooms
This course will introduce students to the history and development of data visualization in journalism practice. Students will learn about the different types of charts and graphics and how accurate visual elements represent data. The course also includes an introduction to data analytics tools.
Data and Visual Perception
In this course, students will learn about the process of transforming and mapping data from “raw” data into other formats to make it more valuable for analytics purposes. Students will also learn how to use specialized software designed specifically for data drilling and number crunching.
Narrative Storytelling
In this course, students will learn about story models and narrative structure to enhance reporting and news writing skills by using emotional appeals to provide a deeper insight into a news story. Students will also learn about the examination of statistics and the difference between traditional and data-driven stories.
Cognitive Load and Perception
This course will teach students about the significance of cognition and perception in the field of journalism. Students will learn the theory behind Gestalt principles, visual working and long-term memory to develop a deeper understanding of cognition and perception in data journalism.
